Autism Services Demonstration
Autism Services Demonstration Treatment and Providers
As part of the demonstration, eligible beneficiaries can receive services from a new class of providers who are not recognized as part
of the basic TRICARE program. The demonstration covers treatments, therapies and interventions known as Educational Interventions for
Autism Spectrum Disorders (EIA) that have been shown to reduce or eliminate specific problem behaviors and teach new skills to individuals
with autism.
Treatment
EIA services:
- implement basic principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and focus on changing the child’s behavior through observation and
measuring the behavior
- gather behavioral data to track progress in reaching the objectives identified in the Behavior Plan
- incorporate parent/caregiver training and input; family members can help teach and support social and communication skills during typical
family activities
Providers
The demonstration expands the definition of EIA supervisors and adds a new class of provider, the EIA tutor. EIA supervisors must be
participating TRICARE-authorized providers to offer services under the demonstration. Behavior analysts provide therapeutic services
to children with autism and TRICARE requires that they are certified by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (
BACB).
Authorized supervisors and companies will be required to direct and oversee these tutors who will provide hands-on work with children
with autism. Tutors will be credentialed and specially trained to work with children with special needs.
All care submitted for reimbursement under the autism demonstration will require prior authorization.
Cost shares apply.
A
directory of EIA supervisors in the TRICARE West Region approved
to deliver services under the Autism Demonstration is now available. Information in the directory is subject to change at any time.
