TRICARE Benefits for Wounded, Ill and Injured
When you better understand how your healthcare benefits work, you and your family may be able to more effectively use your benefits.
These benefits can include programs under TRICARE, Medicare and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Coordinating benefits and programs
may require many resources.
TriWest Healthcare Alliance manages the TRICARE benefit for the 21 states in the
TRICARE West Region. TriWest does not manage eligibility or the benefits for any
Medicare or
VA programs, but we can help you understand your care options.

TRICARE offers
respite care for primary caregivers
Homebound active duty Service members may receive primary in-home care from a family member or other caregiver. TRICARE recognizes that
administering care all day, every day may cause stress and hardship for the primary caregiver. As a result, the TRICARE beneficiary
may not receive the high level care to which they are entitled. TRICARE’s
active duty respite care benefit will cover short-term care (up to eight
hours a day, five days a week) from a TRICARE-authorized home health agency as a reprieve for the primary caregiver.
The beneficiary’s Service branch will determine eligibility for the benefit. There is no out-of-pocket cost when eligible beneficiaries
have the proper authorizations and approval from their assigned military treatment facility or the Military Medical Support Office (
MMSO).
As a part of the respite benefit:
- Only a TRICARE-authorized home health agency can provide respite services
- Respite care delivered by a family member or someone living in the same household is not covered.
