National Recovery Month Highlights Substance Abuse Disorder and Mental Health Support
WASHINGTON (September 23, 2024) — National Recovery Month is observed every September to recognize and address the personal challenges associated with addiction and its harmful impacts.
The observance month is an important opportunity to remind vulnerable Veteran and military-connected individuals that drug and alcohol abuse, and other addictions, can cause long-term harm to personal health and well-being.
In Veteran and military-connected communities, drug and alcohol abuse are commonly known conditions that can take control of vulnerable individuals and damage lives. Substance use disorder (SUD) is a mental health condition that can cause people to struggle controlling their addictions.
Fortunately, many effective treatments are proven to break addictions and offer hope to those struggling with SUD.
During National Recovery Month, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) emphasizes its evidence-based treatments to help Veterans and others find recovery and mental health support for unhealthy substance use.
