VA Offering Free Updated COVID-19 Vaccines to Eligible Veterans
WASHINGTON (March 20, 2024) — The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has announced it is offering free updated COVID-19 vaccines to eligible Veterans. VA is also offering free updated additional doses for eligible Veterans 65 and older.
The vaccines are updated for the 2023-2024 season, and VA recommends that due to changes in the virus it is important for Veterans to receive the updated vaccine.
According to VA, the following Veteran categories should receive an updated vaccine:
- Veterans who have not received any 2023-2024 COVID-19 vaccine.
- Veterans who have not received any COVID-19 vaccines should receive one updated Pfizer or Moderna vaccine OR two updated Novovax vaccines spaced three weeks apart.
- Veterans with moderate to severe immunocompromising conditions may receive additional updated 2023-2024 vaccinations if recommended by their provider.
- Additionally, for Veterans 65 and older one additional dose of an updated 2023-2024 COVID-19 vaccine is recommended if it has been at least four months since their last COVID-19 vaccine dose.
According to VA, adults younger than 65 are current with their COVID-19 vaccine after receiving a single dose of the updated 2023-2024 vaccine.
Veterans can also receive free updated COVID-19 vaccines at sites other than VA health care facilities. Vaccine sites can be located at: Vaccines.gov - Search for COVID 19 vaccine locations.
