VA’s LGBTQ+ Health Program for Veterans Supports Emotional Wellbeing

PHOENIX (July 1, 2024) — The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) LGBTQ+ Health Program is a unique resource committed to creating a welcoming environment and improving health care for all Veterans, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. VA policies require care is delivered in an affirming and inclusive environment and that VA employees respect a Veteran’s identity wherever they seek care.

For rural LGBTQ+ Veterans, health care barriers – and particularly mental health barriers - can be challenging, according to VA. To reduce mental health barriers, VA is increasing its support for rural LGBTQ+ Veterans by expanding clinical telehealth services and use of the Veterans Crisis Line for suicide prevention.

The VA Office of Suicide Prevention also works to educate LGBTQ+ Veterans on its mental health resources and suicide prevention efforts.

Veterans visiting a local VA can request to speak to an LGBTQ+ Veteran Care Coordinator to help get the care they need. Veterans can also visit the LGBTQ+ Locator Tool to reach the coordinator at their nearest facility.
