Marine Corps Veteran Amputee on a Mission to Improve Prosthetics

PHOENIX (December 20, 2023) – In 2004, Jon Kuniholm, founder of Stumpworx LLC, and a former U.S. Marine Corps Captain, deployed to Iraq as a Combat Engineer and Platoon Leader after receiving orders to activate less than 48 hours after swearing in for Reserve service.

During his committed military service in Iraq, Jon’s lower right arm was nearly severed on New Year’s Day 2005 in an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion while on patrol in Anbar Province in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The severity of Jon’s serious injury ultimately resulted in amputation of his lower right arm. Today, Jon directs Stumpworx, his prosthetics firm inspired by his severe Iraq War injury.

Prior to Jon’s faithful Marine Corps service, he already had major personal accomplishments earning degrees from North Carolina State University and the Ivy League research university Dartmouth College.

Jon possessed a wealth of academic talent, but when it came to the call to duty, serving his nation came first. When the call abruptly came, he dutifully deployed to Iraq without hesitation.
