Secure Storage of Lethal Means Can Reduce Suicide Risk

PHOENIX (May 26, 2026) – According to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), many personal suicide crises are short and any delay in access to lethal means can be the difference between life and death.

Lethal means are items that can be used to act on suicidal thoughts and unsecured firearms, knives, medication, and more, can increase the risk of irreversible harm or death.

In particular, secure storage of firearms during a moment of crisis can help reduce suicide risk, VA emphasizes.

VA’s “Keep It Secure” program shares clear, non-judgmental guidance on how to securely store firearms. This guidance can make the difference between life and death in a crisis.

Every Veteran can also receive a free cable gun lock from their local VA facility, making it easier to store firearms for personal safety.
