Military Service, PTSD and Eating Disorders: It’s Important to Know the Connection
WASHINGTON (October 1, 2024) — For Veterans struggling with eating disorders, it can be surprising that they can affect more than young, body-conscious individuals.
Research has shown that Veterans can be vulnerable to eating disorders, partly due to strict physical standards required to serve. Extreme dieting, purging and binge eating can all develop during struggles to meet and maintain physical standards.
Research also shows a strong link between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and eating disorders. PTSD can trigger binge eating and other habits to numb emotions or traumatic memories.
For Veterans and those suffering from PTSD, it’s important to know about eating disorders and the available treatments. Those consistently spending time with individuals who have PTSD should also pay attention and ask thoughtful questions even if the individual does not fit an eating disorder type.
This recent VA News item shares how Veterans with PTSD can address the relationship between serious eating disorders and PTSD.
